Documenting Your Cape Flora Finds with iNaturalist

Rusty Gate is a portal into the remarkable botanical world of the Cape, where fynbos vegetation
and the iconic proteas create a landscape unlike any other. Known for its high level of endemism,
the Cape Floral Kingdom is one of the most botanically diverse regions on the planet. Here,
amidst the rolling hills and rugged terrain of Rusty Gate, plant enthusiasts can discover an array
of unique species. Using the iNaturalist app, visitors can identify, document, and share their
observations, helping to deepen our understanding of this extraordinary ecosystem.

Documenting Your Cape Flora Finds with iNaturalist

Using the iNaturalist app at Rusty Gate turns your explorations into meaningful contributions to
science and conservation. As you wander through the fields of fynbos, snap photos of the
proteas, ericas, and other Cape plants that capture your eye. iNaturalist’s built-in identification
tools help you recognize the species, offering suggestions and allowing you to confirm with the
app’s community if you need assistance.
Once logged, your observation is recorded with essential data—such as the location, time, and
weather conditions—that supports research on plant distribution, ecological trends, and the
impacts of climate change. Every entry builds on the knowledge of South Africa’s native flora,
helping to conserve this fragile biome.

Connect with the iNaturalist Community of Cape Flora Enthusiasts

The iNaturalist community includes plant experts and enthusiasts worldwide who share an
appreciation for Cape flora. When you document a protea or a patch of erica at Rusty Gate,
you’re joining others who are passionate about preserving this unique ecosystem. Through the
app’s community features, you can share your finds, exchange tips on identification, and learn
about seasonal blooms, restoration efforts, and conservation issues affecting fynbos.

Tips for Your Cape Flora Adventure at Rusty Gate

1. Capture Close-Up Details: Proteas, with their layered petals and complex structures, look
stunning up close. Use a macro lens or zoom to capture intricate details of the flowers and
foliage.

2. Stay Seasonal: Fynbos species, including proteas, often bloom in specific seasons. Check
iNaturalist’s recent logs or ask local plant enthusiasts to discover which species are at their peak.

3. Document Diversity: Rusty Gate offers a wide range of fynbos species. Even if it seems
common, every observation helps build a fuller picture of the Cape’s unique flora.
To make your protea-spotting adventure even more engaging, use the iNaturalist app. This
powerful tool helps you identify and log the various protea species you encounter. Here’s how
you can make the most of iNaturalist during your stay:

1. Download the App: Available on both iOS and Android, iNaturalist is free to download and
easy to use.
2. Capture and Upload: Take clear photos of the proteas you come across and upload them to
the app. The community of naturalists and AI tools will assist in identifying the species.
3. Log Your Observations: Keep a record of your findings, contributing to a global database of
biodiversity.
4. Engage with the Community: Share your discoveries with fellow nature enthusiasts and learn
more about the proteas and other flora in the Overberg Mountains.

Rusty Gate Fauna & Flora Register on iNaturalist

We started a project on iNaturalist in 2023 to collate all the iNaturalist observations on the farm
and neighboring areas in our own Fauna and Flora register. There are already around 350
observations with more than 190 identified fauna and flora species.
