Are you ready for the ultimate trail running experience? The Rusty Gate Challenge is back
on 12 October with three exciting race options that will test your endurance and reward
you with breathtaking views. Whether you’re a seasoned ultra-runner or just starting out,
this event has something for everyone. Set in the stunning Rusty Gate Mountain Retreat
and the surrounding farms, the challenge features three race distances:
50km Ultra | 2,180m Elevation Gain
This ultra-marathon kicks off with a demanding 3km climb up Rusty Gate Pass. From there,
you’ll experience a thrilling mix of forest roads and trails, eventually reaching
Theewaterskloof Dam. The toughest part of the race awaits as you face a 13km climb to the
race’s highest point at 1,011m above sea level. Here, you’ll navigate a 4km loop in a
previously inaccessible gorge, a true gem of the route. After descending to Boskloof Dam,
you’ll face Rusty Gate Pass again, before the final leg of steep switchbacks on the Rusty
Gate Gorge Trail brings you to the finish.
21km | 1,120m Elevation Gain
The 21km race also starts with a sharp 2km climb, taking you up to the crest of Rusty Gate
Pass. The route offers beautiful views as you loop through farmlands and hiking trails
before a thrilling descent to Boskloof Dam. The route features another climb up Rusty Gate
Pass before a scenic descent to Elandskloof Gorge, concluding with a final 2km climb to
the finish line.
12km | 820m Elevation Gain
For those seeking a shorter challenge, the 12km race delivers just the right amount of
adventure. You’ll start with a descent into a narrow gorge towards Elandskloof Farm,
followed by a zigzag climb and a route along the gorge. The final part of the course takes
you past Rusty Gate Dam and up a 2km climb to the upper farm dam, before finishing with
3km of single track and farm roads.
